U.S. Solicitor General D. John Sauer told the justices that doubts about the constitutionality of President Donald Trump’s effort to curb birthright citizenship are “profoundly mistaken.”

The status allows people already in the United States to live and work legally because their native countries are deemed unsafe for return due to natural disaster or civil strife.

The Supreme Court will let the Trump administration strip temporary legal protections from thousands of Venezuelans living in the U.S., in a win for its mass deportation efforts.
