Apple Inc. has struck a $500 million deal to buy rare-earth minerals from MP Materials Corp., the US producer that just last week secured backing from the Pentagon.

The Defense Department last week agreed to buy a direct equity stake in MP Materials, the only rare earth miner in the U.S.

For years, Republican and Democratic administrations have dispatched civilian Pentagon officials and military commanders to the Aspen Security Forum in Colorado.

Top officials at the Pentagon office that played a key role in designing the bombs used in the strikes against Iran's nuclear facilities more than two weeks ago cannot say whether the weapons were successful in reaching the deeply buried bunkers.
