The status allows people already in the United States to live and work legally because their native countries are deemed unsafe for return due to natural disaster or civil strife.

In an unsigned order, the Supreme Court said May 19 that the administration can end protections for the migrants pending appeal of the case. The brief order gave no explanation, as is common for actions on emergency requests.

The decision will allow the Administration to end Venezuelans’ eligibility for Temporary Protected Status this year.
