As Republicans prepare to take control of the Senate in January, all eyes are on the three-way contest to replace Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell, who has held the top GOP post for nearly two decades and is stepping down at the end of the year.

WASHINGTON, United States — The Republicans were declared the majority party in the US House of Representatives Wednesday, completing a clean sweep of Congress and the White House in last week’s elections and handing incoming president Donald Trump vast legislative power.

It was the first seriously contested Senate Republican leadership election in decades. Three senators were competing to succeed longtime GOP leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, when he steps down from the post at the beginning of next year and Republicans take back the Senate majority.
