Is there still room in fashion for true originality? That’s one of the questions raised by the news that Dario Vitale is departing Versace.

Donatella’s new role, an acquisition from the Prada Group, and the sudden departure of its newly-hired designer.

On Thursday, Prada Group announced that Dario Vitale, the previously unknown designer who had dared to take the reins of Versace after Donatella, was leaving the fashion house after a single collection. The news detonated across the fashion-celebrity nexus, leaving behind a trail of shredded denim, chain mail and confusion.

The $1.38bn (£1.04bn) deal between the two Italian fashion giants is well below the roughly $2bn Versace was sold for in 2018.
