North Carolina fully expected the hiring of NFL coaching legend Bill Belichick to put a spotlight on its football program.

Mack Brown doesn’t see any reason that Bill Belichick won’t succeed in his first year as the UNC Tar Heels football coach. The former North Carolina coach, during a recent appearance on SiriusXM College Sports Radio’s “Dusty and Danny in the Morning," alleged academic standards were lowered and poured more money into the NIL program.

Belichick has quite the rebuilding job ahead of him, as North Carolina has finished with double-digit wins just once since the 1997 campaign. It was just 6-7 overall and 3-5 in ACC play during the 2024 season and is looking up at programs such as SMU, Clemson, Miami, Louisville and others in the conference.

“It was the craziest (expletive) that I’ve ever seen on the sideline between two coaches,” Johnson told Julian Edelman on the “Games With Names” podcast. “Because Belichick didn’t want to put me in and Parcells wanted to put me in.”

University of North Carolina chancellor Lee Roberts seems to subscribe to the belief that any publicity is good publicity regarding the focus paid on the football program since hiring Bill Belichick as head coach.

The university is also considering adding a commercial sponsor to Kenan Stadium as it looks to generate additional revenue for athletics.

After the deal fell apart for “Hard Knocks” to follow UNC and Bill Belichick, the HBO series will continue with NFL teams.
