The U.S. Treasury Department on Wednesday announced sanctions on Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes over alleged suppression of freedom of expression and the ongoing trial of former President Jair Bolsonaro.

The Treasury Department sanctioned a Brazilian justice Wednesday after he used a series of court orders to reportedly target conservative officials and their supporters. Brazilian Supreme Federal Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes was penalized for using his position to “authorize arbitrary pre-trial detentions” and “suppress freedom of expression,
