Palme d'Or winner 'Anora' became the Best Picture Oscar frontrunner after winning the top prizes at the PGA and DGA Awards.

UPDATED with PGA win: Sean Baker won both the PGA Awards ‘ and DGA Awards ‘ top prizes for Neon’s Anora — on the same night. And if past statistics are a signifier of what’s to come, it is a major indicator for both the Oscars’ Best Director category as well as Best Picture.

Maybe Anora was the frontrunner all along. In the weeks since the Oscar nominations were announced, Oscar pundits and awards strategists have treated the wide-open Best Picture race like an adaptation of Goldilocks and the Three Bears,

Sean Baker won the Directors Guild of America award for “Anora,” Saturday, eclipsing Edward Berger for “Conclave” and James Mangold for “A Complete Unknown.” Since 1948, there have only been eight times that the winner of the DGA award for feature film directing has not gone on to win the Oscar for best director.

So unusually both PGA and DGA, two ever-so-important guild awards ceremonies that can predict the Oscars somehow landed, for the first time I can recall, on the same night in two nearby hotels in Beverly Hills.
