Microsoft Lens was that type of app: a mobile document scanner that turned paper documents, business cards, receipts, and anything else into easily readable digital files. Now that app is being discontinued, Microsoft says, as it directs its users to its Copilot AI chat app instead.

Known for charging no subscription fees and its simple, reliable functionality, Microsoft Lens has been a valuable tool for converting printed or handwritten notes into PDFs and other core file types.

Microsoft Lens, which was launched in 2015, will be retired from iOS and Android devices starting September 15, 2025. Users will still be able to use its scanning features until December 15, 2025, if the app is already on their device.
