Check out @gingerfootgarden's favorite way to fill raised beds: lasagna gardening! 🌱 Instead of filling up the raised beds entirely with soil, she layers compostable materials like cardboard, dry leaves, and other organic materials. Over time, worms and microorganisms break down the layers, creating nutrient-rich soil. It's a great way to use readily available materials and reduce the amount of soil needed. We hope you get inspired to get your garden ready this season! Happy Gardening! 🌿✨ #las

Do you need to lay cardboard down every year with no dig gardening? Cardboard is really useful as it suppresses weeds and breaks down in situ adding some structure to the soil. When wet it is easy to push a trowel through, meaning you can easily plant through it. It works best on small annual weeds and grasses, where larger perennial weeds like brambles are better dug out before you begin (unless you want to keep them for the blackberries! 😋). However, cardboard isn’t always necessary. If you d

Beautiful example of a sheet mulching project that started a few years ago. “Sheet mulching, also referred to as lasagna composting, uses a layer of cardboard or newspaper placed on the soil with mulch on top. The cardboard helps to smother existing weeds and seeds in the soil. The cardboard layer breaks down after several months (depending on soil type and geographical region) and the mulch will begin to decompose through contact with the soil. There are several advantages to sheet composting:

How to do the lasagna garden method! Layer by layer, just like a good lasagna. First, lay cardboard boxes flat on the ground, soak them well with water, then add a layer of topsoil and top it off with mulch. After a few days, the cardboard softens and starts breaking down—that’s when I dig in and start planting. A simple border ties it all together and instantly makes the space look intentional and beautiful. This is how I make the flower beds around our property for that cottage garden look! |

Hearts & Spade on Instagram: "This process called sheet mulching or lasagna gardening is an effective way to eliminate weeds, and prepare a site for planting. It essentially composts organic material on the spot - turning yard waste and discarded boxes into rich soil. I am now a cardboard connoisseur and am oh-so-slowly transforming our surrounds into a garden oasis. I’ve always got a bed in progress and my sites set on the next spot!"

Amy Powers on Instagram: "When trying to build a new planting bed where you currently have lawn, you can easily create a bed by a process called lasagna gardening! At this client’s house we are expanding the front bed to meet another small bed that is underneath a redbud tree. We will continue this bed all the way to the gate into the backyard and add a steppingstone pathway. 1. Mow the grass on your lowest setting on your mower to start. Leave the grass clippings in place. 2. Remove any tape or
