Shrimplet are independent from birth and begin to swim and forage for food on their own. Shrimp swim using their swimming legs called swimmerets. This long-legged shrimp in the genus Nematocarcinus was seen attempting to swim through the water column at a depth of 2,570 meters (1.6 miles) during exploration of "Caldera C" within the Fina Nagu Volcanic Chain as part of the 2016 Deepwater Exploration of the Marianas expedition.
