The bow ribs in my F1 design take such a steep V shape that even after cutting away the inside edge of the mortise with a carving knife and I still have to literally crack the gunnels to get the right shape. . This ties everything together beautifully solidly and helps to unify the frame and transfer the forces to the rest of the structure. Steam bending ribs into the final St. Lawrence River Skiff prototype while filming for the video course. Contrary to what you might expect I actually find it harder to steam bend inside of a form like this compared the free bending processes we use on our kayaks and Canoes. It also takes significantly longer, however it’s the only way to accurately make more complex shapes in skin on frame. The lines on this one are perfect and I’m dying to see this thing finished and get it out on the water! .
