Rita Levi-Montalcini was born in Turin, Italy in 1909. Her father prioritised traditional gender roles and discouraged his daughters from pursuing higher education or professional careers, believing that their primary responsibilities were to their future roles as wives and mothers. She knew this was not her path and insisted on studying medicine.
