Here's a tip for knowing when a freshly applied coat of varnish is ready for another layer. I typically sand in between coats with 320 or 400 grit. It's a very light sanding by hand just to remove any imperfections and rough up the surface. When varnish is dry and ready for another coat it will make a white powder when sanded. If it's gummy or sticking when you sand or balling up, then it's not ready yet. And make sure to remove all the dust before putting down your next layer too. . . . . #wood

Personally, I like to finish in three phases. Sand-finish-dry. I let it sit out in the shade on a sunny but zero-wind day for a couple hours and repeat the process.
