I saw Waitress on Broadway Friday night. During this part of “She Used to Be Mine” (performed here by the incomparable Katharine McPhee), I needed to stop time. I had both hands up to my face, tears pouring. The woman next to me had to put her hand on my arm. I know this girl. I know this loss. I know the impossible question most of us only ask in hindsight: “Where did I go? Why was the sacrifice that seemed most reasonable…myself?” I was gone too.
