The Kayan women of Myanmar wear brass rings around their necks as traditional cultural practice. Additional rings are added each year, and gradually these rings elongate the neck. I’m submitting this piece for a group exhibition in Dortmund this September. The theme of the show is ‘extreme’ and so, as a painter of people, I instantly thought of body modification. The Kayan tribe, who live on the borders of Thailand and Myanmar, are also known as the "giraffe women." Girls in this tribe begin wearing heavy brass rings around their necks from the age of five to make their necks appear longer. When we first saw these women, we couldn’t stop staring at the golden coils around their necks. 🤯🙈 They belong to the Kayan (Padaung) community of Myanmar often called the “long-neck women” by outsiders. We used to think their necks were stretched… but the truth is more subtle: the coils gradually press the collarbone downward and compress the upper ribs, creating a graceful illusion of elongation.
