Albuquerque was founded in 1706 as a Spanish colonial outpost named La Villa de Alburquerque. The original settlement was established around a central plaza and the San Felipe de Neri Church. It quickly became an important stop on the El Camino Real trade route connecting Mexico City and Santa Fe. It was named in honor of the 10th Duke of Alburquerque, who was the Viceroy of New Spain. They weren't supposed to establishment a settlement, so the naming convention was a ploy to curry favor. | New
