When building a Goodyear Welt boot, adding in the welt creates a small cavity under the footbed that is filled with cork. Not only does the cork add another layer of cushion, but it helps mold the boot to foot even further. For our bootmakers, they drop in the cork filler and spread it out smooth like butter with a heated iron. Once all the cork is laid flat and trimmed out, it’s set to cool before the sole gets added and the boot is finalized. | White's Boots
